Insurance for your boat

Whether your love of the water centers around sailing, fishing, cruising, drifting or the sheer serenity of a private cove, there’s no other policy that protects you quite the way Harleysville’s Shipmate® policy does—both in and out of the water. Shipmate’s features include one of the broadest ranges of property and liability coverages available in a single policy.

Afloat Your boat—including your fixtures, furnishings, motors and all equipment vital to its operation—is insured against almost any peril of the lakes, rivers, seas and bays that could possibly come your way. Wind, fire, lightning, collision with other boats and underwater objects, theft, vandalism, explosion, sinking and capsizing are just a few of the types of loss that are covered—up to the limit you select. And, Shipmate has no coastal restrictions!

During transport your Shipmate protection goes with you, transferring your collision coverage form the waterways to the highways. Ditto for your boat carrier or trailer.

In dry storage—during the off-season or anytime, your boat carries the same quality protection, plus coverage for freezing and ice damage (provided you winterize your boat).

Shore-to-shore liability protection
If a claim or lawsuit should ever surface, Shipmate stands ready to cover your legal liability for:
   •  Loss of life or injury to swimmers, water-skiers, other boaters and their passengers (or yours), and most anyone else sharing the waters with you.
   •  Damage to other vessels, piers, wharves or other property you don’t own.

Your family and guests have the same protection while they are operating your boat—as long as they have your permission.

What else is included?
   •  Medical payments to others—This special "goodwill" coverage pays for less serious injuries that occur in your boat, or while boarding or leaving your boat regardless of fault.
   •  Uninsured boaters—If you are hurt by a boater who is uninsured, you have your own insurance to pay for bodily injury damages you are legally entitled to recover.
   •  Cost of compulsory removal if your boat is wrecked or sunk due to a covered loss and the authorities say to "move it."
   •  Towing and labor costs up to $150 if your craft is damaged or marooned and you need a tug or a shove.
   •  Boat accessories—including your detachable marine equipment and items you wear or carry on board—while they are stored away from your boat.

Interested in some options? You can expand your coverage by purchasing any of these additional coverages:
   •  Replacement cost coverage can be added if your boat is three model years old or less. You can select coverage that applies for up to five or ten years after purchase.
   •  Prepackaged upgrades can be purchased to increase your watercraft liability, medical payments and uninsured boaters coverage in varying increments.
   •  Uninsured boaters coverage limits can be increased at surprisingly low rates.
   •  Towing can be upped to $300 if you’re concerned about making it back to shore "on your own."

Is Shipmate for you? The answer is "yes" if all of the following apply to your boat:
   •  Less than 15 model years old
   •  A maximum attainable speed of 40 knots (45 mph)
   •  Not over 30 feet long
   •  Valued at no more than $75,000

Savings Want to save money? With Shipmate, there’s no need to cast around for the best deal. You’ll save money if:
   •  You’ve passed an accredited U.S. Power Squadron or Coast Guard Auxiliary boating course
   •  You insure your home with us
   •  You operate your boat less than eight months a year
   •  Your watercraft is powered by a diesel engine
